Draft Strategy

A well prepared fantasy football league player should do a little homework before your draft and have a solid draft strategy. Well there are exceptions to this. Now, when I first played fantasy football I was a last minute fill in for an already established league. This was a long time ago before all the scoring was done by all of the current online services such as Yahoo and CBS Sportsline and of course ESPN and all the others. I had no real idea what I was doing when I went with a buddy to another guy;s place of work for the large draft room experience. It was fun and I think part of the attraction and fun of participating. Anyway, I was lucky enough to draft Jerry Rice and the rest as they say is history. I went on to pull off a stunning Super Bowl upset as Rice and Steve Young lit up the score board that night on Monday night football. It was a sweet win.

But wait, what about being prepared? Hey look, I'm the first to admit the luck does play a part in winning. You 're just never guaranteed that your guys will perform like you think they will each night. I got a Yahoo league that I run and have been the commissioner for for about 8 or 9 years now and one it several times. To be good in fantasy football though, it's just like in school. You need to do your homework. There's always going to be the top guys that your ESPN fantasy magazine will tell you are the sure things. Usually, most of these guys will be good picks. There are those players that just don't produce like you thought they would and then some other guy comes out of nowhere and lights it up. That's what's so cool is that it's not an exact science and that there will indeed be players that have great seasons that nobody saw coming. Picking these guys and looking for what might happen with these trends is key in having a good season. You also want to have players that are on good teams. Why? These players teams are likely scoring touchdowns and winning. These are the players that will help you get those fantasy points and win your weekly match ups in order to make the playoffs.

Brett Favre was a great pick in his first year with the Vikings

Playoffs?Don't talk to me about playoffs? Playoffs?

These were the words of former Saints coach Jim Mora when asked about his team's chances for the playoffs. It was a funny moment in sports and later used as part of one of those Coors Light commercials with the NFL coaches.

Anyway, to be successful in your leagues fantasy football, you need to keep some things in mind. Hopefully you've been adept at watching the waiver wire and free agents to help your team along the way. I picked up Robert Meacham from the New Orleans Saints this year as a free agent. That's right, he wasn't even drafted in my league. This made sense based on his less than stellar performance last season. He's improved a bunch and put up really decent numbers as a solid fantasy football wide receiver option. Picking up free agents, making trades, are solid ways to pick up players to help your team.

What about the great teams that are already in the NFL playoffs and areresting their great players. This is something you need to be aware ofif you make it this far into the season. If your quarterback is sittingout because they've already secured their post season position, it couldwell mean that you might enter your fantasy playoffs with your starting QB sitting out the game. A good back up QB is a must. Idrafted Kurt Warner this season but also got Brett Favre. He;s had agreat year and I've ended up starting Favre over Warner for most of theseason. Nobody in my league gave Favre any respect and I thought, sure, why not draft him later down the draft? It turned out to be a reallygood pick.

Finally, look at who is hot on your team and who they are playing that week. Is your team on the road. Are they playing a weak team with a poor defense. Is your team at home or are they on the road playing in bad weather? When in doubt, go with the guy that has been productive for you all season if you just can't make up your mind. Hopefully, you can put the right group together that will bring you that coveted fantasy football league championship and the bragging rights for this season with your buddies.
